On friday I had a great time teaching pixel art basics to my students at the Games Academy. So, today I was in the mood to slap some cute jumping characters together. Hope you dig. cheers.

Bioshock Infinite is racist

Okay, so this article is tough.

Usually when I criticise games over social issues, it’s more that I think whoever was responsible kinda lacked a certain perspective or self-reflection to understand what their messages are implying. You know, I don’t need to call someone a sexist for example to point to sexism in what he does.

With Bioshock Infinite I don’t know what to do. What Irrational Games did there is so blunt, I really have trouble separating the message from the messenger.

I really have trouble seeing how everyone involved completely missed out on the fact that they produced a play about white guilt and reverse racism with a white entitled protagonists who gets to be the shining hero and the true victim.

Okay okay, let’s back up for a second, let’s go through this step by step. Continue reading

Hanafuda are a japanese deck of playing cards. These type of cards are a pillar of Nintendo’s company history, since Nintendo Koppai – founded in 1889 (it’s not a typo) – featured these cards as one of their first line of products.

Nowadays Nintendo still produces them, not handpainted but still well crafted. Including this Mario themed Club Nintendo set, which found it’s way into my collection. Check it out. Continue reading

Drawing In Photoshop Using A Game Pad
Yesterday I tried little experiment. I created graphics in Photoshop and instead of using the mouse or a tablet… I was using a game pad. The results were quite pleasing and it is fun to do. So here is how it’s done (works for any drawing software actually):

This sweet set is currently on its way to me.

I just completed the purchase of this sweet game system. A complete Dendy Junior in original packaging. It’s a game console clone of the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES (or Famicon, depending on region) never got released in the former USSR and the taiwanese jumped on that market by gifting the Dendy to the world. Continue reading

Critics Ruin Video Games… …Good!

critics and video games controversies

As much as I photoshopped in here, like the straw… The mountain Dew print already was on that Westboro Baptist Church kid, I swear.

Why? Because what currently goes as “video games” – meaning the games themselves and the culture around them – is actually a system of marginalization and encouraged resentful behavior and memes. Actually I still have other more design oriented articles in the pipeline, but there was already so much shit going down in just one month, I kinda can’t let that just pass by. It’s not okay and it needs to addressed. Hard.

Today I would like to walk you through that system and would kindly ask you to either help break that thing or step the fuck aside. Please. Thank you.

+++ TRIGGER WARNING!: Even though this article aims to be sound and thoughtful, it’s also emotionally honest. So you can expect some harsch language and mighty triggery images. (including actual real world violence) +++

See you after the jump! Continue reading
